Here are the 5 things every employer looks for on a CV:

Commercial awareness

Do you understand the role and the industry?

Having a good understanding of the business will help you to write a better CV. The employer will look very favourably on a CV if the candidate is clearly demonstrating their knowledge of the role and the industry. Injecting some commercial awareness into your CV will help you get one step closer to an interview.

Use certain industry lingo and terms to impress the employer, and pay special attention to how you write your personal statement. Aligning your goals with the company will show that you are aware of how they want to move forward.

Team working abilities

The success of the business relies heavily on the employees’ ability to work well together. Just one bad apple within the department can cause major problems. As such, you need to make the employer aware that you have great team working skills.

But don’t just say that you do – show it! The hiring manager will want to see examples of team working on your CV. Give a successful project as an example, and explain how team work was the driving factor. Don’t try and take all the credit just to look good, as this will backfire. You have plenty of other places on your CV to do that.

Effective communication skills

Communication comes in many forms – written, verbal, online, Skype, face-to-face, customers, co-workers, and so on. No matter what job you’re applying for you will need to have effective communication skills. Even if you are going to mainly be working alone, you will still interact with another colleague at some point – either verbally or via email.

Focus upon the communication skills which are relevant to the role and provide examples of your experience. Make it clear in your CV that you are confident and able to communicate in a friendly, professional and effective manner.

Hard or specific skills

A specific skill relates to something which the company would often deem as necessary for the role. This could be machine operation, computer programming, building or creating, and so on. If the job advert states a specific skill, then you need to try and match that skill on your CV – if you have it of course.

If you are lacking in these important skills, then you may need to consider either applying for a different role, or gaining those skills. Don’t waste the employers time by chancing your luck, and focus upon what you can do. Those skills are vital for the role and you must put them on your CV to stand a chance of getting an interview.

Soft or generic skills

A soft skill is very different from a specific skill in that it relates to something more generic. Problem solving, communication, time management, etc. There will be certain soft skills that are important for the role. If you were applying for a teaching position, then communication is of course at the top of the list of soft skills

Hone in on the top 3-4 soft skills which would be useful for the employer and demonstrate on your CV that you have them to a high standard. Again, this could be through examples from your previous roles – achievements and accolades.
