By Beth Bond Working with the Practice Management Association often means talking to Attorneys, business and legal professionals about those late hours they work or that Work~Life balance they hope to achieve. On more than one occasion, including a conversation I had last night with one of our Get a Life attendees, I've been called out for working outside of the office and been told to practice what I preach and Get a Life. For me- and I attribute this to the environment that I'm privileged to work in- a Work~Life balance is being able to complete tasks without being absorbed by the importance of them. I feel that my day is sufficiently tasked for both purposes and in-turn, I am able to achieve a healthy Work~Life balance. Do I answer calls that come in at 9 o'clock at night? Sure. My goal, our goal, is to quell those fears that accumulate when follow-up is not prompt. When you're in need of support, whether associated with our products or one of our Member Benefits, we should be dependable. This is the only way companies will succeed in today's world. Clients are sick of being ignored and treated as such, “clients”, when, in fact, they're our- your- business' most essential asset. They pay our bills- we might as well pay them some mind. If we work together- we work. Now, there will never be a time in my life when I condone leaving the office at 1 in the morning, or later, because of a backed up work load, needing to meet the costs of your overhead or, missing time with your family because a prospective investor or client needed a meeting. Business is never too important to interfere with the things that really matter. Never. As they say, Business is business. A Career, however is something entirely different. If I have the time, I'll give you mine. If you find yourself lacking this- find someone ready and willing to pick up the slack. This way, you'll never get behind. Find office support that will support you. And stop asking me why- when you call my cell phone with a question- I'm answering your call. It would go to voicemail if I were busy.
